How to reduce your carbon footprint

How to reduce carbon footprint

Carbon footprint is the personal contribution of CO2 emitted in the atmosphere that is responsible for climate change. Shrinking our carbon footprint is the key contribution which we can participate in climate conservation. Reducing the carbon footprint can be done by engaging in several ways that are discussed in this article.

1. Green your transportation

Greening you transportation basically means that you change your old transportation methods to new and reliable methods of transport that are environmentally friendly.

Such methods may include:

- You can walk to your place of work or use a bicycle instead rather than use an old car. Old cars are known to use a lot of carbon fuel that is later emitted to the atmosphere.

- Can opt to use public transport. If the majority of us can use public transport, we can reduce the number of motor vehicles on the roads everyday. This will reduce the amount of carbon emission in the atmosphere. Public transport uses less energy and will produce less carbon pollution comparable with private travel.

- We can also consider replacing our old private cars with an uber service. Uber services are environmentally friendly since the uber service vehicles are well maintained than most of our private vehicles. They have less carbon emission that will help in reducing the carbon footprint.

- When buying a vehicle, opt to buy the most energy efficient with low emission rates of carbon gases.

2. Produce and eat organic food.

Organic production of food will help in reducing the carbon footprint. Some of the products we purchase from the grocery are transported from the farms using fuel. These groceries are easy to produce at the back of our homes. We can apply simple methods of organic farming rather than relying on the modern farming methods that use mainly chemicals and fertilizers.

Cutting down of trees to acquire large tracts of land for cash crop farming increases the amount of carbon being emitted into the atmosphere. Instead, we can find alternatives to ensure that we cut down trees less and plant more trees.

3. Change your home appliances to modern ones.

Get rid of that old home appliance that you have been using for decades and instead purchase the modern ones that are more energy efficient and have a less pollution rate. We can also avoid using them. For example, we can hang the washing out in the sun to dry rather than using a tumble drier. All home appliances should be from a verified distributor as they have a superior efficiency rate.

It is also necessary to replace the incandescent light bulbs with LED bulbs and always turn off the lights when not in use. The amount of carbon footprint released in the atmospherewill be reduced.

4. Reduce your carbon footprint by changing how you use water.

Practice drip irrigation and try hard to farm plants that require less water usage. A carbon footprint can also be reduced by lowering the amount of energy you use to pump, heat and treat water. This is mainly achieved by cleaning your car less often.

Making the right water-efficient decisions when buying appliances such as shower heads, toilets, washing machines and dish washers will help reduce the amount of carbonfootprint.

5. Supporting clean energy sources.

Whenever you are capable, campaign for clean energy solutions to fossil fuels such as the wind and solar energy.

Adding a solar panel to your rooftop is essential as you will offer a solution to your energy crises at home. You can alternatively use the solar energy to heat and pump water at home and also for lighting purposes.

6. Recycling and reusing

Recycle and reuse as much as possible. Also, buy recyclable products when traveling. This will reduce the energy spent on the manufacturing of items. Buying and selling of old products will help reduce the carbon footprint.
